Q. Greaseproof Kit Level

In the packaging industry, “kit level” refers to the grease resistance rating of paper, particularly in food-safe applications like greaseproof bags. This rating is based on the TAPPI Kit Test (T 559), a standard method used to evaluate the paper’s ability to resist oil and grease penetration.

What Do the Kit Numbers Mean?

•        Kit levels range from 1 to 12.

•        A higher kit number indicates greater resistance to oil and grease.

•        For example:

•        Kit Level 3 offers basic grease resistance, suitable for light to moderate oil content (e.g., bakery items, sandwiches).

•        Kit Level 7, as used by Gratpak, provides superior grease resistance, ideal for high-fat content foods like fried items, oily pastries, and takeaway meals.

Gratpak’s Advantage

Gratpak uses Kit Level 7 greaseproof paper in its bags, which offers:

•        Stronger protection against leakage and staining

•        A better customer experience with clean, durable packaging

•        Improved product presentation and food safety standards

In contrast, many competitors use only Kit Level 3, which can lead to:

      •     Grease seepage

      •     Weakened bag integrity

      •     Reduced perceived quality of the food product

By choosing a higher kit level, Gratpak ensures performance, hygiene, and sustainability are at the forefront of every produced
